An Ion Storm (notice the effect of the Storm Radar Extender)
Ion Storms are the curse of pilots everywhere. Limited in duration and always on the move, a storm can pull you out of your jump course at any time. If you do get caught in a storm, your computer will plot a point at which you can safely exit the sector. To continue on your course, fly to this point (marked on your radar with a green "+" and on your HUD with a storm jump indicator.) When you're close enough, press enter to jump to your original destination.

Visibility in Ion Storms is minimal, with a blue fog obscuring everything beyond about 500 meters. Not even radar can penetrate this fog. However, there are Storm Radar Extenders available that can increase your ship's radar range in a storm. The TPG Raptor has a built-in radar extender, making it ideal for work in storms.

Storms almost always occur in sectors with asteroids in them. The explanation for this is unknown, but it is believed to be an interaction between the solid material in the asteroids and the radiation given off when a jump engine is used. By and large, one can avoid storms by plotting their course to avoid any sectors with asteroids in them. Of course, this can often make a simple course much more complicated...
