Instead of ejecting at the current ship position, they stack into a nearby cargo crate if that crate shares the same item ID, and is "close enough" to the actual eject location.

I suspect that stacked items sharing the same itemid behave in the following way when ejected to space:
Instead of ejecting at the current ship position, they stack into a nearby cargo crate if that crate shares the same item ID, and is "close enough" to the actual eject location. -rubin427
