Progress Report

Awesome stuff that's being worked on:

  • I'm (attempting) to write some history of the cap ships. Woo. --red cactus
  • Main page is being re-organized.
  • Some of the weapons pages might have incorrect info.
  • Some of the ships have incorrect info. I've fixed some but they should all be checked. Especially the minimum faction requirements. -Obsidian
  • LeberMac is going to attempt a Deneb Run section of the wiki

Suggestions Place

Put here any ideas you have in passing to add to/change about the Wiki. (If you'd like, also sign your name so if the idea is implemented we can contact the original person for specifications and the like.)

  • GTS on pages is rather dumb and very slow to load. Can we get rid of them? --red_cactus (saying this at risk of lots o' flames.)
    • I concur. It's pointless, slow, and ugly. If you really want it, make everyone download the GTS font and use its unicode characters. But I don't want it at all.--Roguelazer
    • Well I only added cause I thought it would get people more familiar with the characters so when in game they would know what they meant. If you all really don't like it feel free to remove the images from the database and remove the coding, but I won't be the one to do it. --Mark McDoogle 11:43, 29 Jun 2005 (CST)
    • First, let me say, I am not against the GTS in the headers. But, the GTS in the headers creates large header names which leads to problems when viewing differences between versions. I think the GTS in the headers, while a good idea, should be removed.

  • Fix the <math></math> tags --Roguelazer 17:36, 7 Mar 2005 (CST)
    • I think that's gonna need the bugging of Tyrdium. --Lemming
      • Ah, okay. I'll see what I can do. --Tyrdium 15:58, 8 May 2005 (CST)

  • MediaWiki 1.5? Sidebar editing! Mmmm. Please? --Roguelazer 08:37, 29 Jun 2005 (CST)
    • Yes please, I've been asking about this for the past few weeks, both Moofed and I looked into it, but if they have an update for it get it Lemming!! --Mark McDoogle 11:43, 29 Jun 2005 (CST)
    • Now that we can edit the navigation box, can we stick the link for "editors main" under the link for main page? As well as Categories, or something called "Index" maybe?? --Mark McDoogle July 4, 2005 21:32 (CST)

  • Per Rogue's suggestion, most of the intro paragraphs have been moved to before the TOC, keep an eye out for any that have been missed. --Mark McDoogle

  • Categories: My suggestion is that the categories should reflect more what is already grouped on the main page. Instead of just ingame databases, activities, etc. I would suggest that they fall under a scheme of: General, Game Info., Passive Activities, Aggressive Activities, User Interface and Misc., this just ties things together more IMO to the main page, which is grouped nicely and is easy to understand. Why make people remember two different category schemes? --Mark McDoogle 15:21, 30 Jun 2005 (CST)
    • Actually, I'd reccommend instead a heiracheral (sp?) system instead with the top level being "General", "Passive Activities", "Game User Interface", "Game Info", "Aggressive Activities" and "Miscellaneous". Inside those categories would be further categories matching each of the entries to those categories on the main page. IE: The General category would contain subcategories "FAQ", "Rules", "IRC", etc. Those subcategories would contain the actual pages. That way the category system would exactly match the site layout. The current categorization is based off of matching (very closely) the former main page layout. --Roguelazer 16:10, 30 Jun 2005 (CST)
    • I'm shocked, SHOCKED, to say this but, that is exactly what I had in mind in the first place rogue, if only LemHaru would agree to it. --Mark McDoogle 16:17, 30 Jun 2005 (CST)
    • Pretty late at night over here, so I'll think it all through tomorrow morning. But, if I get the gist of it, sounds good. If you need to get my opinion on something you can either e-mail me or use memoserv on IRC to leave me a message, either way I'll get it. (e-mail is more likely to get noticed sooner though) Also, in case you care, editor pages are on my list of things to redo.
    • So as far as categories go, we're pretty much there I guess now, but I have one small request. I really don't see the VO backstory as "misc. info", it's very important info. IMO, and should be both linked in and categorized as General Information. Other then that for the moment I think everything looks good. --Mark McDoogle 6 July 2005 16:13 (CST)

  • Ship class table: In my opinion, this table is:
    • completely redundant (compared to the General ships table)
    • usually out of date (a third place to fix stats!)
    • pretty much useless (does anyone really look at this table and say "I want a medium fighter -- oh look! I'll use an Atlas MkIII!")

I know I'm sticking my neck out here, but I just wanted to start a discussion instead of deleting it on a whim. (Of course, if I don't get any feedback, I'll probably delete it.) --Klox November 11, 2005 03:15 (CST)

  • I'm actually gonna agree with you. We could stand to do some trimming of excess... --Roguelazer 2005-11-12 17:01:31 (CST)
  • I actually do look at it but I agree that it's yet another place to update, it would be nice if the info was able to be entered once and update all over, or have a way to sort charts but wiki is not that hip yet. If it must be deleted fine but I do use it. And it does have it's place. --Mark McDoogle 14 November 2005 23:59 (CST)
  • I agree and vote to axe it. --LostCommander 16 November 2005 9:53 (CST)
  • Mark, are there ways you use the Ship class table that can't be done with the General ships table? (Maybe there's something we can do with the General table to serve that purpose?) --Klox November 19, 2005 03:34 (CST)
  • I'll restate them, but they can not be done easily. Make the charts into databases that can be sorted by there particular column. This way if you are looking for a "cargo" varient vs a "assault" varient it's easier to see. But again, this would take a lot of work to do, and I'm not sure if it's at all possible in a wiki enviornment. --Mark McDoogle 15:42, 5 December 2005 (CST)
    • As I've said before, it could be done. Just not easily. Hell of an extension, that would be. --Roguelazer 21:02, 5 December 2005 (CST)

I spent some time wandering through some of the special pages, and this is what I found:

  • Category:Deprecated
    • Test - This serves no purpose. It should be deleted.
    • Other than Test, the only other deprecated page is Bots:Frigate, which contains very little content. Can't any "historical" information be merged with the HAC page? Then the Deprecated category won't be necessary.
  • Special:Wantedpages - see bugs section below.
  • Current events seems more out of date than ever. I've made my case for it's deletion in Talk:Current events.
  • Special:Uncategorizedpages:
    • CWTOM appears to be a work of fiction.
    • Capitalships and Capitalships history are useless.
    • Capital ships, while mostly correct, doesn't seem necessary. It seems like the description should be moved the the Ships#Capital_Ships section, where it will be seen and can act as an introduction to Cap Ships. (Currently you have to click on a specific cap ship to find a link to the general description -- isn't that backwards?)
    • Misc:dock seems like there is nothing similar to it. Maybe it's contents should be moved into the FAQ, which talks about docs anyway?

And again, I know I'm probably ruffling someone's feathers with some of these comments, but I'm just looking to start a discussion. If I'm shot down, so be it. --Klox November 19, 2005 05:12 (CST)

Hmm, no opinions? I'd love to at least clean up some of the more benign issues, but I'm not a sysop so I can't delete. Are there any sysops that want to help me with this cleanup, or better yet, does Lemming want to make me a sysop so I don't need to bug other sysops? --Klox 23:35, 3 December 2005 (CST)

    • Mark pages for deletion in their Discussion and I'll take care of it. If I agree with you. But I don't entirely.
      • CWTOM and Capital ships can't be deleted. Apparently, there's a lot of offline content for those that needs toe be updated sometime.
      • Test is for memoribilia's sake. Ditto for Bots:Frigate. That page isn't actually about a HAC, just something that looks like one...

Hmm...well... Test, Bots:Frigate, and everything associated with CWTOM is the bulk of my list. So I guess that means we'll just leave them alone. I don't really understand your reasons for keeping them, but I don't care to argue the point. As I said in my initial post, "so be it". --Klox 23:13, 12 December 2005 (EST)

I propose that we remove all of the old, outdated, small images, particularly those in important positions (ie: Image:(s)valkyrie.jpg, our main Valkyrie image) and replace them with higher-quality, higher-resolution images. The original problem of no thumbnails is made irrelevant by MediaWiki's automagic thumbnailing (ie: this for this). Thus the only benefit of smaller images is reduced disk space, which (correct me if I'm wrong) is not an issue. Using new images will also showcase the new lighting model, which makes our wiki a better representation of the actual ingame universe- always a good thing. Finally, it just looks nicer when you can click on the image for a ship and actually see a larger version. Yes? No? --Roguelazer 12:26, 25 June 2006 (EDT)

Can we have file uploads back? Please? Pretty please? --Roguelazer 11:40, 15 May 2007 (EDT)
Sorry about that, usually it is better to either email me or bug me on irc, otherwise I might never see something like this. My email is ineedabettername at gmail dot com. --Lemming

Bugs

If you find any bugs with the Wiki (not syntax errors, but software bugs), post 'em here.

  • Category changes are a tad bit odd. For example, the category IngameDatabases still shows two pages as being in it that aren't in it anymore. This might be a caching issue...
    • Yah, if you log out/back in, it's all better. Probably a caching issue. So before you do anything with Categories, log out and back in.--Roguelazer

TOC

  • Uhh, now that we're on 1.5, it's impossible to toggle TOCs. Like, huh? --Roguelazer July 2, 2005 15:42 (CST)
    • Works for me on Safari and Deer Park (Firefox beta). I blame you. --Lemming July 2, 2005 23:52 (CST)
    • Doesn't work in Firefox 1.0.4. Where the "hide" button used to be, there's a button called "undefined" which does nothing when clicked. However, logging out and back in fixed it. Odd. But w/e!--Roguelazer 2005-07-04 17:00:38 (CST)
    • Odd Rogue, Firefox 1.0.4 is the only app that the wiki doesn't have the problem in for me, when in safari logging out and back in does not fix the "undefined" error. But all weekend and today Firefox (mac) has worked great! --Mark McDoogle 5 July 2005 16:23 (CST)
      • Perhaps it wasn't the login/logout. I also cleared my cache and deleted the wiki cookie at the same time. Perhaps it was some combination of the above? --Roguelazer 2005-07-05 19:04:41 (CST)

Wanted Pages

The Special:Wantedpages page seems broken. It lists two "wanted pages" that aren't linked to by the pages it claims they are linked by. (Does that make sense?)

  1. Open the Special:Wantedpages page.
  2. Click on one of the two places it says (7 links).
  3. Click on any of the pages in the list and look for any pages that link to one of the "wanted pages".
  4. You won't find any. (At least I didn't.)

I wonder if one of the wanted pages used to be linked in the sidebar or footer and the wiki hasn't reindexed the page since the sidebar/footer changed? Editing one of the pages listed in step 3 removes it from the list, but that seems like a crude way to fix this. --Klox November 19, 2005 04:38 (CST) Weird, I'll try updating to the current version of MediaWiki and we'll see if that fixes anything. --Lemming 20 November 2005 04:19 (CST)

Well, I'm going to significantly cut back on my work on the wiki. This is so I can pursue knowledge that will provide use later in life, unlike what goes on during school.

Mark McDoogle

I do whatever needs being done, trying to add any missing material, and trying to gather as much imagery as I can to make the site more interesting.

LostCommander

Make the wiki better.

Miharu

Capital Ships is a section jointly written by CrippledPidgeon, MarkMcDoogle and me. Look but do not touch. Any revisions made by someone other than CP, Mark or myself will be discarded. This section is planned to have:

  • A manual for operations of capital warships, including systems and tactics (currently being written)
  • A short manual for attacking capital warships (this I may leave open for everyone else)
  • A history of capital ships in Vendetta Online
  • Anything else CP, Mark and I can think of while we're working on it.

Moofed
